General Waste
The red-lid bin. Takes everything that can't be recycled—food-contaminated packaging, soft plastics, broken items, mixed materials. Most businesses need at least one general waste bin as a catch-all. Landfill levies make this the most expensive stream, so separating recyclables saves money.
Common for:
Every business type. Offices generate surprisingly little general waste once paper and containers are separated. Retail and hospitality produce more due to packaging and food waste.

Cardboard & Paper
Dedicated bins for cardboard boxes, office paper, and newspapers. Must be clean and dry—wet or food-stained cardboard goes in general waste. Flatten boxes to fit more in each collection. Recycling cardboard costs roughly half what general waste does because there's a market for the material.
Common for:
Retailers receiving stock in boxes, warehouses, e-commerce fulfilment centres, offices with high paper use. If you're breaking down more than a few boxes a day, a separate cardboard bin pays for itself.

Commingled Recycling
The yellow-lid bin. Accepts rigid plastics, glass bottles, aluminium cans, steel cans, and paper together—no sorting required. Containers should be empty but don't need to be spotless. The sorting happens at the materials recovery facility. Soft plastics, plastic bags, and styrofoam can't go in—they jam the sorting machinery.
Common for:
Offices with kitchen areas, cafes collecting customer containers, any business generating bottles and cans. Adding a commingled bin typically reduces your general waste volume by 20-30%.

Food & Organic Waste
The green-lid bin. Takes food scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, paper towels, and certified compostable packaging. Gets processed into commercial compost rather than going to landfill. NSW, VIC and QLD now require many food businesses to separate organics—check your local council rules.
Common for:
Restaurants, cafes, hotels, caterers, food manufacturers, supermarkets. A busy cafe might fill a 240L organics bin weekly just from coffee grounds and food prep scraps. The bins have sealed lids to contain odours.

Medical & Clinical Waste
The purple-lid bin. For sharps, clinical waste, pharmaceutical waste, and contaminated materials from healthcare facilities. Requires licensed disposal with tracking documentation. All waste is transported to approved treatment facilities.
Common for:
Medical clinics, dental practices, veterinary clinics, pathology labs, pharmacies, aged care facilities, tattoo parlours. Any business generating sharps, contaminated PPE, or biological waste.

- 1100L — As tall as a person. Holds 20+ bags. Large offices, restaurants, retail centres with high waste volumes.
